How to Have a Great Newborn Photoshoot With a Fussy Baby

As a new mom, I’m sure you’re still getting into the swing of things with your baby. You’re quickly realizing that your newest little bundle of joy is the one in charge. Let’s face it. They are running the show now, and that’s okay! Scheduling a family photoshoot seems like the perfect way to capture the little newborn details, but the thought of your baby being fussy during the session might be stressing you out!

Take a deep breath and relax – you’re not alone. I know you’re seeing all of these perfect little babies on your Instagram feed (heck, even in my portfolio on my website!) I have a secret…  Those aren’t all calm babies that don’t need soothing. We just didn’t post the photos of them being fussy! I promise you, as your photographer, I can handle it!

Anticipate Baby’s Needs

I’m sure you’re laughing because babies are known for being unpredictable, so how are we supposed to guess what they might need?! The key is to plan around what you already have learned about your baby. Plan around your baby’s schedule as much as possible when it comes to feeding and naps. Most babies have certain times of the day when they are happier and more cooperative. Schedule your photoshoot during these windows to increase the chances of a smoother session.

Choosing the Right Photographer

Of course, I want to be the one to capture your precious memories, but when it comes down to it, choosing the right photographer for your family is the most important thing! Even if you don’t work with me, be sure to choose a photographer who has experience working with infants and families. If you have twins, check their portfolio to make sure they’ve worked with multiples in the past, or you may find yourself sitting around wasting time while the photographer goes through some trial and error with posing. A seasoned photographer will know how to capture beautiful moments quickly and efficiently, minimizing any potential stress for you and your baby. They’ll also have a plethora of tricks up their sleeve to soothe your little one.

Preparing for the Shoot

Preparation is key to having a relaxed and successful photoshoot. Here are a few tips to help ensure everything goes smoothly:

  1. Feed and Change Your Baby: Make sure your baby is well-fed and has a clean diaper before the shoot. A comfortable baby is a happy baby. I normally recommend doing this right before your photographer arrives to your home for an in-home session, or right as you arrive to the studio for a studio session.
  2. Bring Comfort Items: Familiar toys, blankets, or pacifiers can help soothe your baby if they start to get fussy. These items can also be incorporated into the photos for a personal touch.
  3. Dress Comfortably: Choose outfits that are not only adorable but also comfortable for your baby. Avoid anything that might cause irritation or discomfort. If you’re taking advantage of your photographer’s client closet for your baby’s outfits, make sure you avoid putting them in something that needs to be pulled over their head to take off when it’s time to get them dressed. Zippered sleepers work well, or even just wrapping them up in blankets can be perfect! We want to keep them sleepy and relaxed!
  4. Stay Relaxed: Babies can pick up on their parents’ emotions. If you’re calm and relaxed, your baby is more likely to be the same. One of my favorite tips is to have a close friend or family member come over before the session to help take care of baby while the rest of the family gets ready for the session.

During the Shoot

Once the photoshoot begins, trust your photographer and go with the flow. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Patience is Key: If you choose a photographer that has experience with newborns, I promise that they will be patient and are already anticipating extra time for breaks if your baby needs to be fed, changed, or just held for a bit. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, pass us your baby and take a little break while we rock them back to sleep (we love baby snugs!)
  2. Candid Moments: For fresh newborn sessions, we try our best to get your baby to sleep, so we can get peaceful photos of them relaxed. Sometimes, that just doesn’t work out! Each baby has their own personality! If things aren’t going as planned, don’t stress. Some of the best photos are the candid ones. Natural interactions often make for the most cherished memories.
  3. Flexibility: A good photographer will be flexible and adaptable. If your baby needs a break or a change of scenery, we will happily accommodate to ensure your baby stays as content as possible.

After the Shoot

Have a plan for food (especially for you, mom!) I know this sounds funny, but a photoshoot can take a lot of energy and as moms, we often forget to take care of our own needs! What better way to end a photoshoot than getting your favorite food delivered to your doorstep so you don’t need to worry about cooking/cleaning after a photoshoot. Once the session is over, I’ll leave the house, you can unwind and change back into comfy clothes) and dig in! Don’t worry about anything because I promise that your photographer will work their magic to deliver you with the best photos and you won’t even remember that your baby was a little fussy during their session!

Remember, the goal of a family photoshoot is to capture the love and connection within your family, not to achieve picture-perfect poses. The small, sweet moments are what truly make these photos special.

By choosing an experienced photographer and preparing a little, you can turn your worry about a fussy baby into a relaxed and memorable experience. Embrace the moment, and trust that the imperfections are what make your family’s story uniquely beautiful. You’ll look back on these special moments for years and years to come!
