If you’re currently pregnant, I’m sure it’s already crossed your mind. Are newborn photos worth it? Well, let me tell you, even as a professional newborn photographer myself, I get it! When I was pregnant with my twins, even I was going back and forth on if I wanted to get photos taken. There are a lot of things to consider! Now that my kids are almost 5, I get to look at that newborn album with them! It’s amazing how time flies and how important those photos have become to me. I thought I would take a moment to share my thoughts on the topic and see if I can make any of you expectant moms feel more comfortable and set your mind at ease that it’s worth it to book a newborn session.
First off, let’s talk about the nerves that come with having a newborn. Trusting someone with your fragile newborn is tough! When it comes to photographers, there are lots of different kinds out there, with so many different experience levels, but finding that perfect fit is definitely possible, and when you do, it’s like a weight lifted off your shoulders. Some tips to finding your dream photographer are to ask friends for recommendations, go on their websites and look at their portfolio. Ask yourself if you feel comfortable with the amount of newborns they’ve photographed. Check their Google reviews and see what people are saying about their experience working with them. Go to their social media accounts and see if they have any behind the scenes videos posted that help build your trust with them that they keep the safety of all newborns their number one priority! I searched for days before deciding on my photographer, and I had the best experience ever!
Next up, timing. With pregnancy throwing us curveballs left and right, scheduling a photoshoot before your little one arrives can feel impossible. What if they arrive early? What if they go to the NICU? What if they come late? But here’s the thing: great newborn photographers, understand the unpredictability of it all. If you’re in Southeast Michigan and want to book a session with me, for instance, I’ll work with your due date and adjust as needed. We’re here to support you through the chaos!
Having a newborn is expensive. I remember looking at prices of cribs and strollers and being absolutely shocked! It’s hard to not want to be cautious with spending at a time like that. If there’s ever a photoshoot worth investing in, it’s this one. The amount your baby will change within that first month alone will be wild. Also keep in mind that you’ll be running on low sleep and exhausted, so it’s honestly not even worth the effort of trying to DIY it. Newborn photography is an investment in quality and expertise. Professional newborn photographers have the skills and experience to capture those perfect shots, even when your little one isn’t exactly cooperating. They know how to soothe fussy babies, pose them just right, and create stunning images that you’ll be proud to display in your home. If you’re like me, it will also feel really good to have your makeup and hair done and a reason to get out of your loungewear and dress nice for something in those early days.
If you’re just feeling like it’s going to be too much work to schedule a photoshoot after baby has arrived, let me try to set your mind at ease. Before I was a photographer, I thought a newborn photoshoot would be really high stress and overwhelming. I found out that certain photographers really cater to new moms. Find that type of photographer and you’ll feel so taken care of! When I schedule in-home newborn sessions for my clients, for example, I always let them know that I’ll guide them through the session and keep it as low stress as possible. Many photographers bring swaddles, blankets, and any props that might be needed directly into your home. They already have experience on how to soothe a baby and have likely already planned for feeding breaks. I promise, you will never regret getting these photos taken!
Last but not least, let’s talk about home aesthetics. Picture this: you’re drowning in baby blankets, bottles, and diapers, and the last thing you want is someone judging your messy house. Trust me; I’ve been there too. But realistically, most photographers, myself included, get it. We’re not there to judge your tidiness; we’re there to capture those precious moments. Plus, with a few strategic props and camera angles, we can make even the messiest of homes look like something out of a magazine spread. Your photographer will likely be able to guide you through some basic tips to get your home in order and you’ll be good to go.
